Explore chess games move by move and discover how openings are identified with MICOS™ Chess Openings Classification.

The Opening Explorer is a chess opening identification and analysis program powered by MICOS™. Load a chess game or enter chess notation and explore how the opening develops move by move. MICOS automatically identifies recognized openings as you navigate through the game, displaying the Opening Group, Opening Name, MICOS Code and exact notation.

Opening Explorer uses position-based identification, matching chess positions against the registered final positions of MICOS openings. This means that the same classified opening can be recognized even when reached through different move orders. The underlying MICOS classification remains based on exact move order, while Opening Explorer adds a new way to identify and explore its recognised openings.

Try Opening Explorer with this English Opening example.

Copy the chess notation below, paste it into the Opening Explorer input box and click Load Text. Then navigate through the moves to discover how MICOS identifies successive recognised openings.

The Opening Explorer demonstrates how MICOS™ Chess Openings Classification, created and maintained by MasterInChess, can identify successive recognised openings within a chess game. Unlike identifying only the final opening played, Opening Explorer lets you follow the classification as the game progresses. A classified opening may also be reached through different move orders, which MICOS can recognise through its position-based identification.
