Modern Defence

MICOS Opening Group E04.MO – Modern Defence begins with 1.d4 g6. Black adopts a hypermodern approach, allowing White to establish a presence in the centre while preparing to challenge it later. The early …g6 prepares a kingside fianchetto with …Bg7, giving Black long-range pressure along the diagonal while maintaining flexibility in the central pawn structure.

The Modern Defence can lead to strategically complex positions where Black relies on piece activity, well-timed pawn breaks and pressure against White’s centre. Depending on the exact move order, positions associated with the King’s Indian Defence can also be reached, while other continuations retain their own distinctive character.
