Bird’s Opening

MICOS Opening Group A03.BI – Bird’s Opening begins with 1.f4. Named after the 19th-century English chess player Henry Bird, it is a flank opening in which White aims to control the e5-square without occupying it. The opening can create attacking opportunities, particularly on the kingside, although 1.f4 also slightly weakens White’s own kingside. Black can immediately challenge White’s control of e5 with From’s Gambit, 1…e5, which can lead to sharp and double-edged play.
